First night of Performing Arts show is fang-tastic
Southport College Performing Arts students showcased their talents last night (Wednesday) in the first night of rock musical The Late Sleepers.Originally commissioned and performed by the National Youth Music Theatre, this is a Sefton debut for the energetic musical; a story of drama, teenage rebellion, betrayal and heart-breaking bravery.
As the curtains open, the scene is set in a junk-strewn wasteland in a distant future featuring a gang of young people, the late sleepers. These self-styled vampires are scraping a strange existence on the outskirts of a walled city when two strangers stumble upon their hideout.
With show-stopping numbers and a high gothic wedding, this is a fascinating journey through the world of the Undead, exploring the light and the dark of their rock and roll vampire existence.
Performing Arts students make up the 49-strong cast, with direction, choreography and musical direction provided by the experienced teaching staff at the College.
The first night saw an explosion of energy and talent on the stage with a cast filled with stars of the future. Second year student ex Stanley High pupil Nick Donnelly shone as the ''Dark angel'' Gabriel with strong vocals and great stage presence, definitely one to watch out for in the future.
A special mention must also be given to Chloe Ackers, previously of Greenbank High School, who gave a convincing and professional performance as aspiring late sleeper, Wilma.
Most striking was the level of talent of every member of the cast, with accomplished dancers and outstanding singing combined with compelling acting, the chorus numbers were definitely one of the highlights of the show.
Performing Arts Curriculum Leader and Musical Director Pete Scholes said “Our students have working incredibly hard in preparation for this show. We reflect the industry by producing our shows in a limited time span, usually four weeks. Many of our students go onto employment as West End performers, actors, presenters and more so the show is a great chance to see the stars of tomorrow.”
There will be two further performances on 3 and 4 December 2009 at Southport Arts Centre at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £10 (£7 Concessions) and are available on the night or in advance from the Arts Centre Box Office. This show is definitely not one to be missed.
