It’s a question of sport for local school children
Southport College’s Sport students have been working closely with a local primary school offering them fun sport sessions. The 2nd year National Certificate in Sport students worked for five consecutive weeks with Year 6 children from Holy Trinity School over the autumn term. The school children came across to College on a Tuesday afternoon for a range of sports sessions that were planned and conducted by the students to enhance the children''s PE curriculum.
The children got involved with games of Kwick Cricket, Kick Rounders, Touch Rugby and finished off with a Mini Olympics.
In the final week the children showed how much they had enjoyed the experience presenting the Sport students with a hand made thank you card and some chocolates.
Southport College Sport students undertake these sessions as part of one of their course units, Working with Children. This unit gives the students experience first hand of not only how to organise sports sessions, but also how to work with a younger age range. This is invaluable experience as many of these students go on to work with children either through teaching, coaching or leading sports sessions.
Next term the whole process will be repeated with the 2nd Year National Diploma students inviting the same school children over for another five weeks block of sports sessions. The school and pupils are very enthusiastic about these sessions as they have limited facilities for PE and benefit greatly.
Miss Bushell, the class teacher from Holy Trinity School sees their visits to Southport College as a very valuable experience and praised the students’ commitment and enthusiasm in delivering fantastic sports sessions.
