Deciding what options to take in Year 9 is an important choice. What you choose could impact on what career you’ll have in the future.
Through an exciting collaboration with local schools, Southport College is able to offer you the opportunity of selecting a vocational course to study during Years 10 and 11, along with your GCSEs.
Vocational courses are work-based, which means they help prepare you for a particular career. They’re very hands-on, and you’ll come into College as part of your school timetable to use the specialist equipment we have.
With 14-16 School Links, there’s a wide variety of courses you could study, including Beauty Therapy, Brickwork, Engineering, Hairdressing, Health & Social Care, Hospitality & Tourism, Society, Health & Development, Motor Vehicle Studies, Multimedia or Public Services. There’s lots of choice!
Like any course there’ll be an element of class-based study, looking at the theory behind the practical side of your subject. But this will help you to understand why you do things in practice.
If you have any questions about the College or the 14-16 School Links programme, please call the School Links department on 01704 392767.
How to apply
Like any other Southport College course, you will need to complete an application form. These are available from your school.
On the application form there is a section for your school to complete. Once you have completed your part of the application form you will need to hand it in to your school for so that they can complete the reference section.
Remember to get your parent or guardian to sign the form too.
Once we have received your application form you will be invited into College for a taster session and interview.
The taster session will allow you to sample the course to see if it is right for you.
The interview isn’t a test. It’s an informal chat with the course lecturer to give them the chance to get to know you, as well as enabling you to ask any questions you may have.
If you are successful at your interview, you will be offered a place to study your chosen School Links course in the following September.
